Amarillo TX. to Lipscomb TX.
We had a wonderful 2 1/2 hour drive today up into the prairie, "The Texas Panhandle." Our journey was to spend the day in Lipscomb, Texas of Lipscomb County. We did and were very happy to meet a few friendly folks - the postmistress of 30 years who was retired and now spends her time volunteering at the county museum - another woman who worked at the museum - and a real live "cowboy." We visited a saddle shop on the main street which was only one block long and included only three shops. The General Store is out of business and up for sale. We took pictures of the church, post office, the police station (the county sheriff's office), and the county office building.
At the saddle shop we found the owner to be a custom saddle designer and maker and also a long time real cowboy. He actually was a bronco rider in rodeos for many years and was part of the last group of wranglers to head up a herd of Texas Longhorns from Texas to Wyoming in 1985. He has worked as a hand on nearly all the ranches in Lipscomb County.
The Museum curator had to take our picture since we were Lipscomb's and added the picture to the display of other Lipscomb's who had stopped at the museum. We didn't recognize any of the other 7 or 8 couples on display.
It was quite a grand day, whether or not the town name was Lipscomb or not we thoroughly enjoyed the off the beaten path, down home Texas hospitality. But I may add it was cool to see our last name on everything.
Can you see the dinosaur on the hill?
